Guidewire Capacity Building for SI to Overcome Migration Challenges

A leading national insurance company was struggling with outdated mainframe systems and legacy technologies that hindered operational efficiency. Their business processes were inconsistent across various branches, making it difficult to respond swiftly to market demands, enhance customer experiences, and facilitate seamless data sharing across the enterprise.

To address these challenges, a prominent Systems Integrator (SI), recognized as a leader in the Guidewire Leading Peak Matrix, proposed a solution to modernize the company’s technology architecture. The SI worked closely with business and IT leaders to transition the company’s operations to the Guidewire Cloud platform while aligning the migration with the client's long-term roadmap, key delivery milestones, and interdependent business processes.

The Challenge

Despite having the technical expertise to execute this initiative, the SI faced a significant challenge—a critical shortage of skilled professionals with expertise in Guidewire ClaimCenter, BillingCenter, Java, AWS, and cloud migration. To meet the aggressive 18-month implementation timeline, the SI required a reliable partner capable of sourcing, training, and deploying specialized talent.

Our Solution

Recognizing the urgency, our team proposed a strategic workforce solution that involved:

  • Recruiting candidates with strong Java and AWS expertise.
  • Training them intensively on Guidewire technologies, insurance industry fundamentals, and professional communication.
  • Deploying a ready-to-contribute team to support the SI in executing the transformation.

To achieve this, we designed a structured 3-month training program covering:

  • Guidewire ClaimCenter and BillingCenter – Integration and configuration.
  • Java and AWS Cloud – Coding, migration strategies, and implementation.
  • Insurance Industry Knowledge – Policy lifecycle, claims processing, Billing processing and compliance.
  • Soft Skills and Communication – Effective collaboration with global teams and stakeholders.

Additionally, we identified and onboarded junior Guidewire professionals with under two years of experience, supplementing their knowledge with targeted upskilling programs.

To ensure the highest quality, all trainees underwent internal certification assessments focused on integration, configuration, and real-world case studies. The final batch comprised 20 members, including:

  • Java Developers with strong coding skills.
  • AWS Engineers experienced in cloud migrations.
  • A Training Lead with extensive insurance industry experience.
  • A Communication Coach to refine professional interactions.

Deployment and Execution

Upon completing the training, the SI conducted a rigorous evaluation of these resources. Out of 20 trainees:

  • 13 candidates successfully cleared the evaluation and were immediately deployed.
  • 7 candidates underwent a one-month refresher program to reinforce their skills, following which they were successfully placed.

The trained professionals were integrated into different teams, working across multiple shifts to support the Guidewire Cloud migration. Their contributions included:

  • Migrating over 380,000 accounts to the new system.
  • Managing ~5,000 claims within Guidewire Cloud.
  • Integrating over 100 external and internal systems with Guidewire applications and digital portals.
  • Developing 100+ data feeds from the enterprise data warehouse, significantly enhancing data accessibility.

Impact and Business Benefits

This initiative laid a strong foundation for the insurance company’s digital transformation journey. Key outcomes included:

  • Scalability – Enabled expansion into additional states and business lines with minimal friction.
  • Operational Efficiency – Reduced technical debt, minimized enterprise risk, and improved speed-to-market.
  • Data-Driven Decision-Making – Enhanced access to critical business insights through optimized data integration.
  • Customer Experience – Improved responsiveness and streamlined claims processing.

For the SI, this transformation accelerated their Guidewire Cloud implementation, strengthening their credibility and positioning them for future large-scale insurance modernization projects.

Sustainable Workforce Model

To ensure ongoing success, we implemented a Contract-to-Hire (C2H) engagement model, where:

  • The client committed to hiring at least 80% of trained candidates.
  • Payments were structured around key milestones and deployment success.
  • We maintained responsibility for training, backfilling, and ongoing mentorship.
  • Weekly performance reviews and coaching sessions were conducted to ensure seamless integration.

Outcome

By leveraging our expertise in workforce development and technology training, we helped the SI overcome its resource constraints, ensuring a smooth and timely Guidewire Cloud migration for the insurance company. This initiative not only met the aggressive 18-month deadline but also established a sustainable talent pipeline for future Guidewire-related projects, reinforcing our role as a trusted partner in IT staffing and digital transformation.
